      Moved about the year 1830 to South Bend, Saint Joseph Co., Indiana where they lived the rest of their lives. He ha d a large family. One son married a Denny girl who was a sister to Arch Francisco's wife (o f Wells, NY). Another son married an Overocker, perhaps a sister of Michael Overocker. (Sour ce: Whitman, Scott Winfield, unpublished manuscripts and diaries, 1880-1909.)

      Much of the information came from a family bible. The "History of St Joseph County" p 711 i s about all the documentation I have seen on the Whitman family. A short description of Joe l Whitman (b 1811) and his family and parents. It says Joel left NY in 1830 and went to Erie , PA where he married Artemisia Hewitt.. The rest of the Whitman line came from a Donald R W illiams, an author in Glouerville, NY, who wrote a book about Oliver H. Whitman, an adirondac k guide, son of Oliver Wesley Whitman who kept a journal of the family in the West hill coun try near Wells, NY. They are descendents of Zebulon W. (b. 1789). Isaiah (1801-1874) and Sa rah, his wife are buried in the Wells, NY, cemetery. There is another Whitman cemetery nea r there.
