    • ! Thomas & Richard BRUSH were the founders of 2 distinct lines of the Brush Family. Thomas Br ush was in Southhold, L.I., probably as early as 1650 or 1651. Richard Brush was in Cambridge , Massachusetts in the spring of 1658. He was in Long Island waters by the summer of that yea r. Soon there after, they owned adjoining lands in Huntington, L.I. Though early town land re cords mention both Thomas & Richard Brush many times, and their children and grandchildren we re prominant in the town for a hundred years, no hint of the relationship existing between th e two has been found. The intimacy between their families is so apparent in the records it ma y be assumed they were brothers or perhaps cousins.
There is much evidence to show that a father and son relationship did not exist; a relationsh ip frequently stated in print as a fact. It is idicated they were both Englishmen.
When the American Revolution came, descendants of Thomas & Richard were to be found not onl y in central Long Island, but also in Westchester, Orange, Ulster and Dutchess Counties in se veral towns of Fairfield County, CT., in Huntingdon & Gloucester Counties, New Jersey, and i n Bennington, Vermont (Genealogies of Long Island, Vol. 1) - obtained from Long Island Geneal ogy Web site.
