I am confident now that I've resolved the mystery of "Daniel" vs. "David" Spencer.
After searching through the early Luzerne County newspaper extracts, I found a single reference to "David" Spencer of Kingston Twp., but numerous references to "Daniel" Spencer of Kingston and "Daniel D." Spencer of Kingston. Almost certainly "Daniel" is the same person as "Daniel D.," and I'm confident now that that "Daniel D." Spencer is the same as "David" Spencer. This was resolved for me by the 1840 census of Luzerne County Revolutionary War pensioners. The census shows only two Spencer Revolutionary War pensioners in all of Luzerne County that year -- Elam Spencer and Daniel Spencer, both residents of Dallas Township. The 1893 History of Luzerne County says the family of "David" Spencer, Revolutionary War veteran, came to Dallas Township "about 1837." So, the census has no trace of any "David" Spencer, but does mention Elam and Daniel together in Dallas Township at a time when "David" Spencer, Rev. War veteran, should have been living in Dallas. This confirms those online databases that identify Elam and Daniel as both being Rev. War veterans, and it also shows that Daniel Spencer must be the "David" Spencer of the 1893 History of Luzerne County. Daniel's middle name must have been "David," and he evidently was known as "David" among his family, while his legal name must have been Daniel David Spencer.
