The patriarch of the Long Island Robinson clan, John Robinson first
appears in recorded history as a
witness to a deed on October 2, 1675. He lists his residence as Oyster
Bay. Based on later testi ony, he would appear to have been just 21
years of age in 1675, making the year of his birth approximately 1654. It
has been offered by several
experts that he came to Long Island from either the are a around Lynn,
Massachusetts or he may have been an immigrant direct from England. He
was referred to as a "joiner" or carpenter in a number of early records.
John was granted ten acres
at Cold Spring on May 2, 1677. Sometime between then and October 7,
1681 he built a house on the grounds where the State Fish Hatchery would
later be located. He was allowed to put up a corn mill and a saw mill
on the stream separating
Oyster Bay and Huntington townships. John and his family lived on a five
acre plot in Oyster Bay from November 26, 1681 until December 17, 1689.
This plot was sold on June 11, 1690 and he then described himself as
"John Robinson of Great
Sucksess in ye bounds of Hempstead in Queens county on Long Island in ye
Colony of New Yorke" At the age of 37 he was chosen to represent Queens
County in the provincial legislature which met in New York City on April
9, 1691. John and his
family appear on the Hempstead Census of 1698. He is first
