"I give my Soul to God, in hopes of a kind reception through Jesus Christ, my Lord, and my body to the Earth to be decently buried in hopes of a Joyfull and Comfortable Resurrection at the Last Day." All debts and funeral expenses are to be paid by my executors. I leave to my eldest son John 1/2 of my land northward of the Long Hole, and he shall have his half on the east side joining to my brother William Downs; I also leave him 1/2 of my Little Neck, that is the south end of both land and meadow; and he is to allow his mother, my now wife, the improvement of the same till he is of age, and then she is to have the use of 1/3 so long as she remains my widow. I leave to my third son, James, the other half of my land, from the middle of the Long Hole to the Sound upon the west side; also 1/2 of my Little Neck, both land and meadow upon the north; my wife to have the improvement of it till he is of age. And my son James shall have a drift way through the land which I have given to my son John to the bridge. And my sons John and James shall have a drift way from the bridge to the south road. I leave to my second son Daniel all my land and meadow which I have not disposed of, except 1/2 of the swamp called the Long Hole which lieth against the land which I give to my son John: And my wife is to have the use of it till my son is of age. I leave to my wife Margaret the use of all lands as above and all movable estate for her "to dispose among my children as she sees fit, and when she sees fit," except 4 cows, which I give to my 4 daughters (not named), and I make my wife executor.

    In ye name of God Amen this eleventh day of April in ye year of our Lord Christ 1699 I Thomas Ryderof Southold in ye County of Suffolk on ye Island of Nassau in ye Province of New York being weak in body but sound in mind thanks be to Almighty God therefor & Calling to mind ye uncertainty of this transitory life do make ordain consitute & appoint this to be my last Will and testament in manner & form following ---Imprimis--I bequeath my soul to Almighty God from whence it came & my body to ye easth to be directly interred according to my degree & quality by my Executor hereafter named --
    Item- I give & bequeath to my son Joseph Ryder my homestall to say housing orchard long lot & Homacke lot the half of my out lands & meadows to be equally divided between my two sons Joseph & Providence regard being had to quality as well as quantity & my desire & will is that my brothers in law Nathaniel & Gershom Terry shall see it done--
    Item--I give to my said son Joseph all my tools I implements of husbandry the one half of all my Cattle except one white faced which I give to my daughter Hester--
    Item--I give to my son Povidence Ryder my new lot & the house thereon half of my old laands & half my meadow as aforesd half my cattle & half myClothes linen & woolen & my son Joseph ye other half.

    By ye tenor of these presents Know ye yt on ye 23rd day of May Anno Dom. 1699 at ye Manor ofSt. Georges in ye County of Suffolk before Coll. William Smith Judge of ye Prerogative Court in ye sd County was proved & approved ye last Will & testamt. of Thomas Ryder late of Southold in ye said County deceased on ye 12th day of April 1699. The administration of ye goods chattels and credits of ye sd deasced was granted to Gershom & Nathaniel Terry of Southold.

    Notes:

    On 13 July 1635, Richard (age 17), along with his brothers Robert and Thomas, sailed from England in the ship "James" bound for America. From Salem, Richard went to Springfield, MA, and then to Lyme, CT in the New Haven Colony and with his brother Thomas, eventually arrived in Southold. Richard was admitted a "freeman" of New Haven, CT while residing at Southold. He was commissioned Lieutenant by Gov. Nicholls of NY on 8 Apr 1665 (DeForest, L.E., "List of Commissions Issued by Governor Richard Nicolls in 1665 and 1666 to Long Island Train Bands," NYG & BR, Vol. 70, Jan 1939, p. 60).

    Page 137.--RICHARD TERRY, Southold. Leaves to wife, Abigail, during her life, "the accommodations in Town, and house and lot that properly belongs to the house, that is the 4 acres joins to the house, with the orchard. And 8 acres of land that lyes at the North Sea, and 2 acres in Calves neck, and 1 acre in the old field, and 2 acres of meadow in the Great meadow at Catchache." Leaves to son Gershom, "one half of my wood land at Catchache." To son Samuel the other half, "and a piece of meadow that was my brother Thomas Terry's." Leaves to daughter Abigail 20 acres of land lying in the Fort neck to her and her heirs, "that is to say, Thomas Rider's heirs." Leaves to sons Nathaniel and Richard, "my house and the land which I live upon here at Squash neck," with the meadow in Fresh meadow when Richard is twenty-one. Leaves to son John, after his wife's decease, "the house and accommodations in Towne." "I leave all my children to be at my wife's command, to be educated and brought up, both for the good of their Souls and Bodys," till the sons are twenty-one and the daughters eighteen. Leaves to son Samuel two acres of meadow at Ackabache. Not dated. Makes wife and son Gershom executors. Witnesses, Barnabas Wyndes, Sarah Wyndes.
    "POSTSCRIPT.--When my wife see cause to live in the Towne, my three eldest sons are to fitt and repair her house in a habitable and comfortable manner."
    The will having been proved at last Court of Sessions in Southold, the executors were confirmed May 13, 1676.
